Nutrient, sediment and land-use analysis
Relative nutrient and sediment loads increase several fold with watershed urbanization.
(Data from Reference 1)
Sediment loads** increase in the more urbanized. sub-watersheds.Note the large increase in excess nutrients* with degree of urbanization. The chemical analysis did not include metals, other organics, oil, de-icing agents, etc. that are also known to increase.

*Nutrients reaching the Mattawoman, Potomac, and Chesapeake Bay fertilize excess algae, which chronically clouds** water and depletes oxygen as algae die & decompose.  Occasional algal blooms are increasing in frequency,  and can lead to fish kills and poison the water for people.

**Cloudy water prevents re-establishing the lush submerged aquatic vegetation that once graced our waters with life-giving habitat for everything from snails to fish.
