A Tale of Two Streams

This web presentation compares the living resources and water quality of two Mattawoman
tributaries with adjacent watersheds, one forested and one more urbanized.
The unusually thorough data illustrate clearly that urbanizing a watershed leads to degradation:  the stream draining the more urbanized watershed is found to exhibit excess nutrients and sedimentation, and to suffer a significant loss in living resources.
If present plans for the continued increase in urbanization of the Mattawoman watershed are not altered, we can expect similar losses to the Creek’s vaunted living resources.
This material is based on a poster presented at the Second Streams Symposium sponsored by Maryland’s Dept. of Natural Resources at the Carroll County Community College, 10-13 August 2005
